STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS From Stars to Scores – A Stellar Finish at IIT Patna Shivam Pratapwar and Deepika Ambade, third-year students from the Vijaybhoomi School of Science and Technology, recently brought pride to the university with their outstanding performance at the Astro Particle Voyage Hackathon, hosted by IIT Patna. Competing in a 12-hour data sprint, the duo secured Third Place among national teams for their innovative approach to classifying galaxies using real astronomical data. The challenge involved categorizing galaxies, ellipticals, spirals, and galactic mergers based on data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Galaxy Zoo, with parameters like color indices, eccentricity, and structural moments. Shivam and Deepika stood out by combining astrophysics insights with advanced stacked ensemble models and enhancing interpretability using UMAP and SHAP techniques ensuring their predictions were both accurate and scientifically robust. The experience was made even more enriching with the support of mentors Saunak Dutta and Dr. Salur Srikant Patnaik, whose guidance bridged AI and astrophysics concepts seamlessly. Reflecting on their journey, Shivam and Deepika credit the hackathon for showcasing the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, and for pushing them to translate classroom knowledge into real-world solutions. Congratulations to the duo for turning stars into scores! |

FACULTY का FUNDA |
We often think the ‘share’ button is the biggest game-changer of our times—and in many ways, it is. One viral post can reach millions. But let’s not confuse visibility with credibility. You can get likes and shares, sure but when someone’s buying a TV, a laptop, or an industrial machine worth over a lakh, they still want the basics: a good reference, real interaction, and reliable after-sales service. Now take memes. They’ve replaced editorial cartoons for this generation. Sharp, funny, and sometimes brutally honest they spread faster than news itself. And today, anyone with a smartphone can become a content creator. That’s powerful, but also risky. With everyone broadcasting, media literacy can’t just mean “know how to post.” It should also mean “know how to think.” Brands are already riding the wave of user-generated content, but where’s the original thinking? That’s what we need to bring back. The bigger concern? Students. Reading newspapers is rare, films are watched alone on OTT, and opinions are shaped by the infamous "WhatsApp University." If we want them to think independently, we need more group work, real discussions, and less screen time. And finally bias or fake news? Honestly, both are dangerous. By 2025, the best funda is still the old one: don’t take anything at face value. Do your research, ask questions, and remember integrity, quality, and trust always outlive trends. |
